Insider's tip

Day 1: Day 1. Arrival in Havana

• Meet & Greet with our representative on arrival at Havana International Airport.
• Private transportation to the city of Havana.
• Overnight in Havana in a Casa Particular (or hotel)

Habana Vieja, the old town, was founded in 1519 by the Spaniards. Today, 500 years later, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Latin America, colorful, lively, both traditional as hip, magical as realistic. Havana is a party.
You find cathedrals, colonial palaces, inviting squares, and a maze of adorable alleyways. If you want to get to know the Habaneros, go to the Malecón, the boulevard, the seawall, the alternative to everyday live for many residents. From fishermen to lovers, from musicians to entire families, everyone comes together at the Malecón.

You will stay in a Casa Particular (private guesthouse) in Old Havana. Wander through this fascinating backdrop of monumental sights and enjoy this vibrant city.
Hosanna Havana!

After breakfast in your hospitable casa, you will head east towards the province of Matanzas. First to the town of Jovellanos, to the estate and eco-farm Finca Coincidencias; a community project inspired by the Correa family.
Hector Correa, his wife Odalys, family, neighbors and friends have worked the unruly soil and transformed it into a green oasis. They dedicate their free time to pottery; robust ceramics in the style of the region, but the farm is their biggest passion.

You can ride horses, fish in the creek, do pottery, learn to mix your mojito, taste fruit cocktails, try the tastiest bananas ever.
In this idyllic atmosphere, a Creole lunch buffet will be served; a rich palette of daily fresh delicacies from own soil. There are exciting desserts and freshly squeezed juices. You often eat best with farmers. Fancy a beer, wine or a good glass of rum? That is also possible at a reasonable price.
Family feeling is tight in Cuba. Maybe you noticed this in the morning when you said goodbye to your host family, now you will experience it in the peaceful countryside.

The road takes you to Cárdenas, located at the bay with the same name. Numerous horse carriages determine the street scene. In a panoramic tour you will discover this charming place; beautiful sites often hidden in silence.

Matanzas is not that far. In the lovely and atmospheric Hotel Encanto Velasco a delicious dinner has been prepared, you are the guest of honor.

• Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Havana
    • Matanzas Province
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner
    • Hotel Encanto Velasco, Matanzas

Your breakfast will be served in the neoclassical dining room of the hotel. Next, a city tour called ‘Encanto y Tradiciones’; charm and traditions, a panoramic tour along the once rich city squares Libertad, Catedral and Vigía, where the Danzón and Rumba in the sultry ‘20s of the last century experienced their heyday.

There is enough that makes Matanzas endearing, the tranquility, the tradition of the Danzón, dancers, poets, of culture and of Afro-Cuban folklore.
Three rivers flow into the sea and flow into the wide bay where pelicans dive. Seventeen bridges connect the banks of the rivers Yumurí, San Juan and Canímar. ‘The Venice of Cuba’ is what the residents ironically call their city. In a panoramic tour with guide you can see how charming Matanzas really is.
Highlights are the Calixto García iron bridge, the view from Monserrate, and the robust fortress Castillo de San Severino from 1735, once a prison, now it houses the National Museum of the Slave Route.

After lunch you will travel to Varadero for an ultimate beach entertainment. Crowds will be avoided, as you overnight downtown in a casa particular, cozy at a family home. Just walk into the town for a paladar or a terrace, wave the sun down at the bay.

A good breakfast in your casa, stretch a bit and you're ready! Under the supervision of a qualified dance teacher (M/F) you follow a Danzón master class. It's at the ABC Academy and the guide will pick you up at 9 AM.

The Danzón does not require much rhythmic feeling nor hip-gymnastics, it requires above all elegance. The Danzón comes from the European court dance, brought by the Spaniards. You may have seen it in historical films. A group of noble persons collectively dances formal patterns. Originally a stiff dance, but Cuba would not be Cuba if they did not interpret the figures more loosely.
At the beginning of the 20th century, dance became immensely popular among all layers of the population. Morality became looser, partners danced closer together, flirting with each other. ‘Moral decline’ the authorities shouted, but the genie was already out of the bottle, certainly in the province of Matanzas where you are now. The Danzón is still an official dance and music genre in Cuba.

The afternoon and the evening are yours.

Around 1.5 million guests stay in this popular beach destination every year. Most visitors stay in luxury resorts on the hotel strip built on about the northern half of the 20 km long beach.
The inhabitants, including the guests staying in their casas, stay on the first half of the peninsula. From your casa you can walk straight into the main street, the park, the market. The dream beach with palm leaves umbrellas is nearby.

In the village there is always music in the evening if you want to dance. You can also relax, enjoy all the beauty that you have experienced again. An early sleep would be a waist.

Here are some suggestions for a swinging time in Varadero:

• Casa de la Música: A renowned stage for live music.
• La Comparsita: Loved by Cubans, live music, salsa dance groups, comedians and karaoke. A bar, dance club and cabaret in one
• Calle 62: During the day a snack bar, in the evening a vivacious night spot. Often live music until midnight.
• Discoteca la Bamba: A large disco. Salsa, Merengue, Danza, disco, etc.
• Palacio de la Rumba: In short called La Rumba. Popular disco for dancing on Caribbean beats. On Reggaeton, on Salsa, on all that is trendy in Cuba.
• Mambo Club: Also trendy, yet stylish, Cuban Mambo, and related music from the 50s. They employ dancers to teach you the Mambo.
