It sounds like paradise, 8 days by e-bike through the Cuban provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Rio. Nice pedaling, the wind on your face, 2 days on a car-free dream island, the silence around you, swimming, diving, the beaches and the bays. You will smell Caribbean cuisine, you will smell the sea from all corners.
You are a cyclist as well, sporty and adventurous. You don't grumble at a headwind or a wet suit after a summer shower. Enjoy the toil uphill and the sweat on your curved back.

It is indeed ‘toiling in paradise’, although far more relaxed. You will have a cool e-bike, your motorized friend in good and bad times. Besides, you don’t cycle alone, we will ride along; a multilingual guide on the bike, and an escort van as a luggage carrier, a van full of spare parts, batteries, bottles of water plus all the things you do not want to carry with you.

The accommodations can sometimes be basic, but always effective and charming. All lodgings and restaurants have been tested before the trip and are the best along the route. There is little tourism in this region, the reason why you cycle here. The unexpected and improvising according the circumstances, is an essential part of everyday Cuban life. A flat tire, power outages, blocked roads, it can happen, and we cannot safeguard you from this. We arrange transportation, accommodation and food for you. Our goal is to get you daily fresh at the start and to let you enjoy the diversity of West Cuba, almost without pollution.

Day 1: Day 1. Arrival in Havana

A private transfer will bring you from the international airport of Havana to the city.

Your first night in Havana has been booked in a hotel, a casa particular (the Cuban variant of a B&B) or a casa de campaña in a ‘campismo’ park.
You may already meet your fellow travelers.

  • Meals: Meals are not included on this day

    • Havana
    • No meals included today

After breakfast, the guide will be at your door at 9 am. His Cubyke shirt and futuristic bikes immediately identify him as your guide. First a short introduction, after which your handlebars and saddle will be adjusted to your size. You will receive instructions and explanations. About the roads, the traffic, the rules and to what you should pay attention as a cyclist.

We're on our way. The first stage goes from Havana to Las Terrazas. The road will be shared with vintage cars, camionetas, bicitaxi’s, tractors and horse-drawn carriages. The first decor consists of the outer suburbs of Havana. We pass the small airport of Playa Baracoa and take a break at unknown but beautiful bays. The free trade zone of Mariel is located here, the largest container port in the Caribbean, not necessarily beautiful however interesting. We charge the batteries during lunch as a precaution. The consumption can be considerable due to the wind. No worries. There is a van full of spare batteries.

After lunch, the north coast of the province of Artemisa draws it landscape, first to Cabaña and next, on almost car-free roads, via San Juan into the Sierra de Rosario (UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1984). It becomes hillier, but the area will make everything exceptionally good. The finish line today is in Las Terrazas. No better place to chill out between rivers, waterfalls, lakes and wooded hills. Nutrition for both; the batteries and for you as well. A delicious dinner as comfort for today’s endeavor and as a breeding ground for tomorrow.

• Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Havana
    • Las Terrazas
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

Muscle strain? You will cycle it away. Pedal through the natural park of Las Terrazas, slowly gaining height. Even with an auxiliary engine it can be rather though. You will climb to Soroa with its orchid garden and splashing waterfall.
Hear the birds. There are 70 species here. They like to hide among 850 plant species. (11% of the plants and 50% of the animals can only be found here on this beautiful spot on earth).

After lunch, something will occur that not everyone experiences. You will cycle on the Autopista, the highway, albeit with little traffic. At San Cristobal you will turn off and breathe in again the atmosphere of rural life. Santa Cruz de los Pinos and San Diego de los Baños with its healing springs, a rediscovered spa Cuban style, are on the route.
We will ‘set camp’ close to the Cueva de los Portales cave where Che Guevara’s command center was located during the Cuban crisis in 1962.

Recharge during dinner in your lodging in this natural environment.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

    • Las Terrazas
    • Soroa
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

‘Tobacco Road’ is how we call the third stage. We cycle to Pinar del Rio, the largest city in the eponymous province and close to Viñales; much smaller and nicely nestled in its valley.

Fields full of tobacco rise from the red earth, a breathtaking landscape. Visit the tobacco factory and find out why the world is so lyrical about the Cuban cigar; the Cohiba Behike, the Monte Cristo, the Partagás, monuments of Cuba. Cuba's oldest indigenous tribe lived in this region and already smoked these aromatic leaves. Once, Pinar del Rio became one of the richest cities in Cuba because of the tobacco trade with Europe.

When he is not working on the land, he prefers to talk about tobacco himself, Hector Luís, the youngest winner of the prestigious Hombre Habano-award for the best Cuban tobacco producer. You will visit his tobacco plantation Vega Quemado de Rubí. You will have lunch at his cozy farm.

Villa Aguas Claras is today’s final destination. You can use the pool and of course dinner will be served here. Stretch your legs. You've earned it.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Pinar del Río Province
    • Viñales
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

By now, you will pedal more and more smoothly. North to La Palma, through a fascinating area where the pillars of a former cave landscape stand tall and brittle, memorials of thousands of years of erosion.

We are approaching the northwest coast which we will cross tomorrow. Today, you will be warmly welcomed by Gustavo and his hospitable family. In their rustic casa particular, far away from the world, a steaming meal and a bed are waiting for you.

Tomorrow is a day of rest. Rest is good for cyclists.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Viñales
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

At 9.30 am, after breakfast, you will cycle to the jetty, a ride of only 10 minutes. The ferry awaits to navigate you to your car-free dream island for 2 days of happy-go-lucky chilling, lazing, sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and diving. Chalk white beaches, crystal clear water, the Robinson Crusoe feeling.

You will spend the night in the only hotel on the key, Hotel Cayo Levisa, where they serve a nice meal and the coolest cocktails for the tired cyclist.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Cayo Levisa
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner
    • Hotel Cayo Levisa, Cayo Levisa

Cayo Levisa is considered a little piece of heaven on earth. You can do nothing all day on your own little island. You can do what you like to do if you don't have to do anything all day. That is relaxed, opens new thoughts and offers new perspectives.

However, if you do miss the activity. If you miss the physical efforts, go to the hotel’s water sports center. Divers like to visit Cayo Levisa. One of the best-preserved coral reefs in Cuba is located in this protected area. There are more than 500 species of fish, sponges and mollusks. (You do need to show your diving license or logbook). Snorkeling is also an option.

Guided walks can be booked as well, such as sunset tour. This nature reserve is a resting place for many migratory birds.

    • Cayo Levisa

    • Hotel Cayo Levisa, Cayo Levisa

Enjoy a pleasant morning on your Treasure Island, the ferry will leave for the mainland at 1 p.m. See how your island gets smaller in the immensely blue sea. Again, on the mainland, put on the helmets, as we are going back eastwards to the Bay of Cabañas. The route, villages, the people reveal a Cuba muy auténtica and in its full glory. Tourism is hardly known in these remote regions. You will be astonished, so will be the villagers. E-bikes are often welcomed here as if they are aliens. Those surprised faces is really touching.

Today’s finish will be at the Bay of Cabañas and after dinner, there is still plenty of time to share pleasures or draw your own plan.

    • Cayo Levisa
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

The last leg. At 9.00am we will hop on the bike. Back to Havana, the magnetic metropolis where it more than a week ago started. We stay inland, pass almost forgotten pueblos. You will see the sugarcane plants, once the backbone of the Cuban economy, now photogenic ruins from days gone by.

The suburbs of Havana announce the end of this tour through West Cuba. Unfortunately, it's time to park your steel steed. Maybe with saddle pain, certainly with pain in your heart. It is almost over. It has been really nice.
Happy Havana welcomes you like a cycling hero. They will be amazed to hear you telling that you have been to Viñales and Cayo Levisa by bike. Definitely something to be proud of. So many experiences and your memories have yet to begin.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included
