Criss-crossing Central Cuba in eight days. On your e-bike you will cross five provinces (Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus), a Cuban cocktail of nature reserves, flora, fauna, mountains, waterfalls, wind and sea, along panoramic coastal roads, drowsy villages and awake cities. Full of historical splendor.
You are well looked after; you get meals and a safe place for the night.

Your e-bike gives you exactly the right push to take all that beauty at your own ideal pace, cycling far away from the usual tourist routes, relaxing as well as strenuous although not exhausting.

The accommodation - with breakfast included - can sometimes be basic, nevertheless always effective and charming, and in some cases even right at the beach. All lodgings and restaurants are tested in advance and harmonize perfectly with the route and with the philosophy behind this cycling trip.

The unexpected and the improvisation due to circumstances is an essential part of Cuban daily life. A flat tire, power outages, blocked roads, it can all happen, and we cannot safeguard you from this.

Almost all of your meals are taken care of. Do not expect haute cuisine, but the tastiest and most nutritious that you can prepare with Cuban dedication and ingredients.

You will be accompanied by a cycling guide and by an escort van carrying your luggage, repair items, batteries, spare parts, bottles of water etc.

Our goal is to get you fresh at the start every day, to support and show you the true Cuba, almost without pollution.

Day 1: Day 1. Arrival in Havana

A private transfer will bring you from the international airport of Havana to the city.

Your first night in Havana has been booked in a hotel, a casa particular (the Cuban variant of a B&B) or a casa de campaña in a ‘campismo’ park.
You may already meet your fellow travelers.

  • Meals: Meals are not included on this day

    • Havana
    • No meals included today

After breakfast, the guide will be at your door at 8 am. You can recognize him by his Cubyke shirt and futuristic bikes.

After a short introduction, the handlebars and saddle will be adjusted to your size, instructions and explanations will be given. About the roads, the traffic, the rules and what you should pay attention to as a cyclist.

The first destination is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast towards the south coast. A monster stage right away but no worries. To avoid the traffic web around Havana and an overdose of rural miles, you will first be taken to Agramonte or Australia. How? That depends on the group size and the available transportation. Traveling by train is by far the most exciting way, but trains may be in modest conditions and can regularly fail. Perhaps with camionetas from the '50s, the bumpy way, or in a modern bus. Cyclists are as flexible as the rubber of their tires.

About 60 kilometers (37 miles) before the final destination, put on your helmet and cycle. In ‘the middle of nowhere’, you will be right in the middle of it. Small places. Australia is the largest, also small but with a legendary role in the American invasion in 1961. Many Cubans are proud of their revolution and like to talk about it. This is also the case in Australia's museum, when it is open, we will taste history.

Where we definitely stop is at the Criadero de Cocodrilos, with 10,000 animals the largest farm in the country. Crocodiles are not huggable, but they are eatable in the adjacent restaurant. Want to try? It's possible but not necessary.

Playa Larga is today’s finish, with the bay nearby. Rinse sweat away with an invigorating swim and sit down for a joint dinner in one of the paladares. The first stories can be shared. Enjoy the menu but also consider the nutrition of your battery.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Las Terrazas
    • Havana
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

Your breakfast will be prepared in your casa particular. Departure is at 9 am. A panoramic coastal road along the Bay of Pigs takes you to Playa Girón, historic ground, where the Cuban revolution heroically was maintained. At this spot, with the support of the US, 2000 well-trained Cuban exiles landed in 1961 trying to overthrow the young regime. They were defeated in three days. Later, 1200 prisoners were released in exchange for food, medicines and machines worth 53 million US dollars.

Our possible biggest opponent today is the Cangrejo, the Cuban red crab. Once a year, from May to July, they migrate from the rainforest to the sea. Not alone, not just a couple, but the whole bunch, forming a sort of red moving road carpet. It is a stunning sight but disastrous for your tires. Especially avoid the fallen ones. In case it is really crab rush hour, we will make a detour.

You follow the road along the bay and have lunch in a paladar near the coast. Continue to Playa Girón. Here too is an interesting museum about the wonderful victory of yesteryear. A visit is included. Playa Girón has exactly the sea you have wanted to swim in all day, just the right color, just the right temperature.

In the evening and night, you are a guest in a casa particular or in Hotel Playa Girón. This hotel is not the most beautiful but therefore it is characteristic.

The evening is for you and your traveling companions.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Soroa
    • Las Terrazas
    • Bay of Pigs
    • Meals included: lunch and dinner

Have your breakfast on time, as we continue to peddle at 9 am. Another beautiful coastal road, the sea on your right, the land on the left. Even without crabs you will have to pay attention to possible potholes in the road and slow traffic, especially in the inland. As a precaution, please load your e-bike during lunch. Batteries and cyclists must be well fed. And remember… in case of emergency we have a reserve.

Cienfuegos was founded by French settlers, 3 centuries later than cities such as Havana and Trinidad. That explains the spacious layout and open character. It has its own Malecón, a flourishing promenade and flamboyant buildings looking like huge colorful cakes.

Cienfuegos, the youngest old city, barely had to defend itself against pirates and was virtually spared from war violence. Situated quietly under the Caribbean sun, it became richer due to sugar cane, tobacco and coffee. The old center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been beautifully restored. A true pleasure that a lovely casa particular and a tasteful dinner have been arranged for you in this city with its French ambiance.

And after dinner, a pleasant night falls in the ‘Paris of the Caribbean’. Noblesse oblige. Don't overdo it. Tomorrow we will head to the mountains.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

    • Cienfuegos City
    • Cienfuegos Province
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

Enjoy a good breakfast and on time. The starting sounds at 9 am. It will be a spectacular day, both in terms of landscape and for your legs. First El Nicho. A fairytale waterfall. From about 30 meters (98 ft) high, the water splashes into a natural pool. Think of it as a super shower, or as a splashing applause for you. A more refreshing dive is hardly thinkable.

The summit of Topes de Collantes is at about 800 meters (2625 ft) above sea level and a true attack on your legs. There are several serious climbs. It will be struggling through a peaceful landscape full of views, mountain lakes and waterfalls. Lots of green, full of flowers, birds and fruits, with even more colors than the rainbow.

In the middle of this natural spectacle you sleep in a hotel or campismo; best compared with a (Cuban) campsite. There is some time if you want to cycle a circle or walk with a local guide. We will eat together. Everyone has experienced something different, so plenty of stories to tell. Night falls in this forest of sounds, the mattress is your best friend.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Topes de Collantes
    • Cienfuegos Province
    • Cienfuegos City
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

Have a good breakfast, and again before 9 am. In the next cycle-leg you will be rewarded for all the altimeters you gathered yesterday. The descent to Trinidad, the descent to sea level. It probably will be more braking than pedaling. It is a phenomenal spectacle. After every curve a different panorama pops up. Sometimes the mountains, sometimes the coast, sometimes the old city in between. Once below, near the beach in the Casilda district, there will be your stay.

But first lunch in a cozy restaurant in the center of Trinidad. The towns cobbles are really photogenic but due to the crowds it is a true art of balance for cyclists and for people wearing high heels. After lunch we will stroll through this beautiful town.

Trinidad, 505 years old, is according to UNESCO and according to many others the most beautiful and certainly one of the most authentic colonial towns in Latin-America. The cliché says that time has stood still, but this only applies to the decor, not to the liveliness in the streets and beautiful center.

Since Trinidad, after many centuries, has been kissed awake by tourism, it is vivacious and filled with music and joy. Trinidad is a party in full color. Especially at the swinging Plaza Mayor. There are several beautiful museums in the town which is a museum in itself.

We will cycle another circuit along the beaches; Playa Ancón and Playa de la Boca, along the old coastal route. A stunning sunset has been ordered while you drink your Mojito. Relaxed, we will return to our home in Casilda. The culinary delights of the region and the temptations of the city are awaiting you. The night of your dreams is waiting here, or the dreams of your night.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Trinidad
    • Cayo Levisa
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

You came to Trinidad through the foothills of the Sierra de Escambray. Today, we will take the coastal road back to Playa Yaguanabo; the circuit sur. We will make a detour to Parque El Cubano, where you can take another shower under another waterfall. Small-scale tourism, Cuban style.

In this area, the best place to sleep is in the Islazul hotel Villa Yaguanabo. A small bungalow and a dinner have been reserved for you, on a quiet bay with a private beach. You have the choice between reposing and relaxing. The heaviest part has been done. You are almost there.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included

    • Trinidad
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch and dinner

We will take the route through the countryside, el campo, as the Cubans say. The hidden villages, authentic, hospitable and proud to be Cuban. Here, people are still surprised about your e-bike, and you yourself are not an everyday phenomenon.

Back in Cienfuegos there is all the peace and space for you. You already know the city a little, good enough to find a sympathetic paladar, alone, together, or with new friends. Cienfuegos offers a range of options. It wants to be discovered.

  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch are included

    • Cienfuegos City
    • Cienfuegos Province
    • Meals included: breakfast and lunch

Back to Havana, hometown of this ‘Tour de Cuba’. First a short leg starting at 9 am. Havana is too far for one day. We probably cycle the first part, skipping the less attractive one. A transport is arranged for you and your bike allowing you to see the countryside through the windows of the vehicle.

It is a sharp contrast, such a vibrant city after so much nature. Get on your bike again to see something of Happy Havana. El Capitolio, Plaza de la Revolución, Habana Vieja and Centro and the Malecón are guaranteed.

Time to say goodbye to your e-bike with which you have experienced everything, with which you have conquered cities and mountains. No recharging batteries tonight. We will do that. No doubt you will find a suitable paladar yourself for a last dinner. Havana is yours.

  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch are included

    • Cienfuegos City
    • Cienfuegos Province
