Some travelers head to the least visited, most off-the-beaten track places to escape the crowds and downshift to a more local pace. If this sounds appealing, head to Guantánamo in Cuba’s far east. Once there, you can stay in the recently re-opened Hotel Martí, a step away from emblematic Parque Martí.
This hotel dates from 1951 but has been updated and brightened with a yellow/white paint job and cute red and white awnings. La Fama roof terrace (with bar) is a chill place to sit a while and take in the sights of the historic center. On weekends, La Fama hosts special musical events popular with local Guantanameros. The restaurant at the Hotel Martí serves ‘Ajiaco Baracoano’ (vegetables and meat broth), a typical local dish.
It’s ironic that more foreigners don’t visit Guantánamo given the ubiquitous, legendary song La Guantanamera, which visitors have been singing, humming and whistling since 1966. After all, it’s about women from Guantánamo. And then there’s the US Naval Base, of course, on Guantánamo Bay some 15km south of the city, which has been occupied since 1903.
Guantánamo is renowned locally for its cocoa and coconut; in the adjacent parlor La Primada, chocolate and coconut delicacies are prepared using traditional recipes.
A few blocks away is the Casa de Changüi (a Cuban music genre from this region). Another attraction is the Tumba Francesa Pompadour; a dance, song and drumming style, brought to Cuba by Haitian slaves. La Casa de la Trova is on Parque Martí.
