Travel with Kids - the fifty-fifty family formula

Also Recommended for: Traveling with Kids/Families , Scuba Diving , Beaches, People

When kids are no longer vulnerable babies, their parent´s eagerness to engage more with culture, history and nature of exotic destinations will probably increase. Children, however, prefer to migrate during the holidays to sand and water. To create a balanced holiday schedule, fulfilling all interests of every family member, isn´t difficult at all, at least not in Cuba, neither with Iberostar, nor with Cuba Travel Network.

One of the great things about Cuba is that kids are encouraged to be seen, heard, and participate. Kids, as well as their parents, will feel welcome and wanted here. Cubans absolutely adore children and esteem family life highly.

We have compiled a balanced itinerary, traveling from city to beach and making use of the outstanding properties and facilities of Iberostar.

★ Check also Iberostar´s special offers with attractive children discounts (at beach resorts). First and Second child enjoy a 50 % markdown, when sharing the room with their parents and making use of the existing beds. (Maximum occupancy 2 adults + 2 children in 2 double beds).

Here comes the Fifty-Fifty Family Formula!

Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival at Havana

After arrival at Havana´s International Airport, a private transfer will bring your family to the heart of the capital. Hotel Iberostar Parque Central has a privileged location, standing majestically across the Central Park.

★ With a pre-booked transfer, you avoid immediate queuing up at the airport for a first money exchange. After check-in, you can do this at ease in Parque Central´s reception.

Day 2. Exploring Cuba´s capital

Perhaps the only thing the delicious breakfasts in Parque Central could be lacking, is peanut butter - if desired, you should bring it with you from home.

(Old) Havana can be fun for kids since it’s a lively open air museum, with traditions and history playing out in the picturesque streets, parks and plazas; cheerful and colorful surroundings with often a live music soundtrack.

• The historic district La Habana Vieja (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO) is mainly car-free, hence child friendly. You´ll visit this part walking, accompanied by a communicative and private guide, meanwhile learning more about important landmarks. But first a two-hour ride in a Vintage Car, moving gentle and comfortable the entire family over Havana´s seafront boulevard Malecón and elegant avenues.

• Hotel Iberostar Parque Central has (2) lovely rooftop pools, providing stunning views over the city. A perfect afternoon activity; tasty burgers with fries can be ordered for lunch at the adjoining terrace.

• Havana is definitely at its prettiest when the sun is setting (in summer it will be dark at around 08.00pm, during the winter at about 06.00pm). The glorious promenade Prado (Paseo de Martí) located right next to Iberostar Parque Central, provides a lovely walk to sea. Do as the Cuban families do, and settle down on the quay wall of the Malecón, until the sun has disappeared completely in the Straits of Florida.

Day 3. Las Terrazas – Art, Culture and Community Project

In addition to architecture, culture and history - generously revealed in Havana City - Cuba provides another particular element; nature.

Both, parents and children will treasure a day outdoors during this Private Jeep Tour to Las Terrazas.
This intriguing place, where life takes place at a lower gear, is only at an hour southwest of the capital. Majestic nature, art studios, natural river pools, coffee plantations, and a canopy tour (optional) can be found at this unique ecotourism community.

Ask your guide to show your kids a Cuban school, splash and swim in the river San Juan and drink an espresso (or a juice or soda) in Café de María.

We almost forget to mention that on the way to Las Terrazas, the jeep will stop at ‘Fusterlandia’, an incredible open-air art project. Cuban artist José Antonio Rodríguez Fuster, clearly inspired by Gaudí, covered his whole house and studio in painted ceramics, and tiled the whole neighborhood as well. His colors, shapes and subjects are a feast for the eye, for all ages.

Day 4. From Capital to Cayo

After breakfast, the voyage to the next wonderland can take off.

Although domestic flights to Cayo Las Brujas (the local airport at only a 5 - 10 minutes drive from the Hotel Iberostar Ensenachos) are scheduled on daily base, we do recommend to cover at least one transfer stretch overland. This option may seem tougher than it is, but actually it’s fun and comfortable as well. After all, the total travel time by land does not differ that much from the one by air, and a transfer overland is less subject to changes than a local flight.

★ We created a transfer-service by taxi, allowing you to stop wherever you want on your route, as long as you don’t exceed the 4 additional hours and 50 kilometers on top of established time and distance. This way, you can insert a visit to Santa Clara (mausoleum Che Guevara), or to charming Remedios.

Cayo Ensenachos is a key, located on the north coast of Villa Clara province and forms part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago. It is book-ended by Cayo Santa María and Cayo Las Brujas. There is just one hotel on this cayo – with two of Cuba’s most spectacular beaches surrounded by a protected nature for the exclusive use of Iberostar Ensenachos guests.
You’d be hard pressed to find finer, whiter sand and clearer, bluer waters, which contrast marvelously with the bright green mangroves and palm trees lining the beaches.

Check-in at the Park Suite Section - situated west from the main building of Iberostar Ensenachos - with rooms in 14 two-story colonial-style bungalows built around a central courtyard. It’s designed especially for families with children, featuring two pools (one for adults and one for children), a water park and a Kid’s Club (4 years and up).

Meals: breakfast, all-inclusive plan (after having checked-in in Iberostar Ensenachos)

What we will do however, is highlight every day a particular service, facility, activity or other characteristic of Iberostar Ensenachos and its surrounding, in random order.

★ The Park Suites on the ground floor have a terrace, the ones on the upper floors a balcony overlooking the gardens. The spacious rooms are classically decorated in tranquil, harmonizing colors and come equipped with air conditioning and ceiling fan, phone, satellite TV, safe-deposit box, hair dryer, private bathroom, iron and iron board, coffee maker, amenity kit, daily stocked mini-bar, DVD. ★ The hotel´s Wellness & SPA Centre accommodates a sauna, Jacuzzi, fitness room, Vichy shower, Scottish shower, jet shower, hot springs and an open area for aerobics. Yoga and Thai-chi can also be practiced, or one can consider a massage or body care treatment.
The majority of these facilities are not included in the all-inclusive formula, and the Centre is located in the SPA area, which is accessible only to persons over 18 years. Anyhow, you can plan the SPA-sensation when the kids will join a longer activity organized by the mini club, such as an excursion. Or make use of the provided daycare.

Day 9. Beaches and Coral Reef

★ What Iberostar Ensenachos did not have to construct, organize or manage, is the breathtaking nature, formed countless light years ago.

Cayo Ensenachos is part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago (Gardens of the King) and with some 2500 islets, is it the largest and most extensive of the four surrounding Cuba. It is bordered by a 400-kilometer long wall of coral and is one of the largest coral reefs in the world; number one is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

The key is horseshoe-shaped with two secluded beaches: Ensenachos and El Mégano (among Cuba’s best) and is also a refuge of endemic flora and fauna. Powdery white sands stretching more than 2.6 kilometers coupled with calm, beautiful turquoise waters make this an enchanting destination. Don’t forget your snorkel gear as there’s decent snorkeling right from the beach here and don´t forget your shell-bucket when searching for gorgeous seashells (you may take the shells to your hotel, but not from the island).

Day 11. El Pueblo La Estrella

We already wrote it, Cayo Ensenachos is sandwiched between two brother keys: Santa Maria and Las Brujas. An electric train shuttles between Iberostar Ensenachos and Cayo Santa Maria to ¨El Pueblo La Estrella”, a small village built to resemble a colonial town. It features 3 restaurants in replica buildings from Caibarién, Remedios, Santa Clara and Trinidad. There is also a burger bar, ice cream bar and bowling alley (with bar and pool tables), shops and a crafts market.

Day 12. Return to Havana

It is a fact that in Cuba a transfer by road is often more punctual than an air transfer. This has nothing to do with security, but everything with availability. Lack of availability may cause that some flight itineraries are subject to cancellation or have to be rescheduled.

That is why we absolutely do not recommend booking a domestic flight connected to an intercontinental flight. Instead, traveling one day earlier to the destination of your departure (in most cases this will be Havana) guarantees a smooth home bound.

The cute airport of Cayo Las Brujas is only a 5 to 10 minutes’ drive from Cayo Ensenachos. You can make use of a transfer picking up all passengers from Cayo Santa Maria´s hotels. It is faster though and more efficient to take a taxi to the airport. (Check-in 2 hours before departure).

Flight time is about 60 minutes and in most cases Aerogaviota will land at the national airport west of Havana City, called Playa Baracoa Airport.

A pre-booked private transfer will bring you to Iberostar Parque Central for your last night.
