Hotel Description

Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city on the island, is full of rhythm and vibrancy and Caribbean heat. When you discover its streets, history and music, for sure, you’ll want to slow down your vacation.

The Gran Piedra, sitting high in a microclimate at 1,200 meters above sea level, and only 20 kilometers from Santiago de Cuba, allows you to relax, respire and admire the local plants, flowers and wildlife of this high-altitude peak.

The temperature of the Big Rock notably falls as you pass the middle of the 12 kilometer climb on the zig zag road to the peak of the rock which bears this name. This microclimate encourages the growth of the flourishing and varied plants and flowers which characterize this area.

The Gran Piedra is actually a massive volcanic protrusion which measures 51 x 25 x 30 m (L x H x W) and weighs around 75,000 tons. We recommend climbing the 452 steps to the peak where you’ll be rewarded with stunning and panoramic views of the Sierra Maestra Mountains, the sea, and the entire coastal stretch.

The Big Rock is usually visited on an excursion where eco-tourists enjoy the cooler climate and the natural environment.

The hotel accommodation consists of a series of simple and rustic brick cottages with roof tiles and plenty of room — they feature balconies offering panoramic views, and chimneys, too. The complex also has a restaurant.

El Cafetal La Isabelica, just 2 kilometers from the peak, was one of the first coffee plantations in the area; the ruins were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The colonial mansion of the plantation owner is intact and it’s worth visiting to see it and the remains of the operation. There are guided tours from the hotel which can take one of four different routes to La Isabelica.
